TW: Rape and abuse.
Disclaimer: The reviewer is not triggered by this subject.
Admittedly USYA and in need of trigger warnings, but this is one which can’t be ignored. Ellie Frias never wanted to be popular, she just wanted to blend in. But she certainly didn’t want to wind up dead. Stuck in the room she was attacked and killed in, she discovers she’s not the first girl her boyfriend Caleb attacked. This is an extremely well-written and, in my opinion as someone who isn’t triggered by the subject, sensitively handled book looking not at why Ellie was raped, but how society’s expectations of young women landed her and the others in that room. We are taught that a boy being mean means he likes us and that a girl in a short skirt, or one who has slept with that guy before, is asking for it. It will break your heart with just two words and refuse to put it back together, which doesn’t often happen in YA. It’s not overly graphic but readers who struggle with the subject matter should avoid or approach with caution.
