One of the most talked about books of 2017 with film rights optioned and readers clamouring for advances copies, Adeyemi’s fantasy debut has a lot to live up to. Happily, it manages it with a brilliant adventure teaming with magic, great central characters and a rogue princess. Zelie has one chance to bring magic back to Orïsha, but with a prince hell-bent eradicating magic for good hot on her heels and a princess on the run with her, it’s not an easy task. Adeyemi has created an engrossing world with believable magic and characters to root for. One scene in particular, involving an arena and some ships, is so horribly good; heartbreaking and thrilling in one go.
All praise aside, the book is too long. There’s a point about halfway through where it feels like everything is wrapping up, and you’re left wondering what the next 300 pages are for. But the world and protagonists are engaging enough to pull it off, and we can’t wait for the next instalment!
